October 24, 2009, MCB #10, Blue Marsh.

The season ending tournament on Blue Marsh Lake  was the final stage for a tightly contested AOY race. With strong wind and heavy rain in the forecast, the approach to the boat ramp was quite the sight. In years past, we have experienced a calamity of events while dumping the boats at the ramp. But this was a first! A tireless boat trailer belonging to our own Ranger Rick. Not a big deal, the livewells work!!!!!!!!! We love ya Rick!

The wind made fishing very difficult however the rain held off until about 1 PM. Then it pretty much poured! In the end, Pete Yas managed a nice largemouth on a greenpumpkin Berkley Heavyweight worm to clinch the 2009 Angler Of The Year honors.

Dave Brown caught two bass weighing 5.29 lbs to finish in first place. One fish was a 3.89 lb smallie caught on a crankbait. Gary Woomer followed up in second place with two bass weighing 4.55 lbs caught on a greenpumpkin Baby Brush Hog. Pete Yas finished in third place with one largemouth that weighed 3.66 lbs. Although not fishing for points, Sean Appert caught the lunker of the day, a 4.29 lb largemouth on a crankbait.

August 7, 8, 2009, MCB #8, Potomac River.

The club's second away trip of 2009 brought the members to the mighty Potomac River for four days of frogging and flipping in the thick, massive, Potomac weedbeds. Two days of practice allowed most guys the opportunity to develop various patterns at numerous locations, both north and south, from the launch ramp at Marshall Hall. It was decided that the club would use Friday and Saturday as the official tournament days, and each angler would score their heaviest one day weight. Water temperatures ranged from 78 to 84 degrees and we had a falling tide most of the day throughout our stay.

Friday was a good day for most of the guys as seven anglers would use their Friday weights for points. On Saturday, Pete Yas and Adam were the only anglers able to cull up weight from the previous day. The final results are as follows:

Dave Brown                            12.17          5 LM
Pete Bucci                               12.00          5 LM
Gary Woomer                           8.99           5 LM
Greg Szczepanic                     8.26           5 LM
Pete Yaskowski                       7.42           5 LM
Adam Howson                         6.98           5 LM
Brian Nagy                                5.25           4 LM
Tom Bell                                     4.47           3 LM
Rick Booz                                  3.41           2 SM, 1 LM

Day 1 Lunker, Pete Bucci, 4.24 lbs.
Day 2 Lunker, Gary Woomer, 3.67 lbs.

July 11, 2009, MCB #7, Elk River.

July on the Flats usually means weedbed fishing at it's best. Aside from Pete Yas schooling the field on how to cull a five bass limit for 9.41 lbs and first place, most of the guys struggled for bites. Johnny McVay continued his pursuit of AOY with another consistent second place effort of three bass for 6.60 lbs while dealing with a bad back. Third place and lunker of the day went to Pete Bucci with one bass for 3.91 lbs.

June 27, 2009, MCB #6, Cayuga Lake.

The clubs first away trip of the year provided fishing excitment for all who attended. Several days of pre-fishing allowed the members to develop patterns and find fishable water on the massive 40 mile long finger lake. Thursday was hot and sunny, Friday dealt with passing thunder storms, and Saturday was mostly cloudy with 20 mph wind most of the day. Water temperature ranged from 70-75 in the shallow, northern end of the lake with cooler temperatures of 60-66 from mid lake to the south.

Rick Booz continued his hot streak by backing up a bold prediction of a guaranteed win at Friday nights dinner. His day included dead batteries and needed jump from the lake police boat. At day's end, Rick stood at the scales with a five fish limit weighing 12.66 lbs. His weight was bolstered by a 5.09 lunker he caught on a 4 inch wacky rigged senko between docks on the northern end of the lake. John McVay continued to pace the club in overall points with a strong second place finish of five largemouth for 12.34 lbs. John caught most of his weight on a golden shiner spinnerbait buzzed over the top of weedbeds on the eastern shore. A classic worming performance demonstrated by Bennie Brown slotted him in third place with a five fish largemouth limit weighing 12.27 lbs. Bennie's go to bait was a texas rigged yum dinger fished with a pegged weight.

It was an enjoyable, fish catching tournament in which the entire field caught limits of largemouth and first place through third place was decided by less than one-half pound. Of noted significance, Gary did not experience any manufacturer related boat, motor, or trailer malfunctions. Only those that were self induced!

June 14, 2009, MCB #5, Lake Nockamixon.

Seven club members fished the fifth event of the season on the Nock. Heavy rain on Saturday night, combined with rain throughout the previous week, caused some concern for water clarity. However, the lake handled the drenching rain with ease and provided 12 to 18 inches of good visibility along with an abundance of weedbeds. Water temperature varied between 68 and 72 degrees. It looked like a great topwater bite would be awaiting us as we launched the boats around 5 AM. The day’s limit was three fish, 15 inches.

Rick Booz won the event in prominent fashion catching three LM that weighed 10.11 lbs, a 3.37 lb average. In addition, he took home the lunker of the day with a 4.66 lb fish caught on a 4” Senko.  John McVay placed second with three LM that weighed 8.15 lbs. John caught his fish on a Pop R and 5” Senko. Third place went to Pete Bucci with two LM for 6.60 lbs that were caught on a Buzz Frog and Carolina Rig Baby Brushog (4.41 lb).

May 16, 2009, MCB#4, Flats, Elk Neck.

Nice day, warm weather about 65, overcast all day didn't even need the rain gear. Real, real windy. The fish were very uncooperative.

Dave Brown did manage to inflict spinal compression on John McVay and himself by getting his boat flying about 8 feet out of the water. "It flys real nice but I think it may need new shocks". The landing was real hard. There was tons of boat traffic. Mr Bass out of Anchor, 3 tournaments out of Elk, and an ABA out of the Bo.

May 2, 2009, MCB #3, Tydings Marina.

Nine guy's showed up at Tydings Marina to fish the clubs third scheduled event of the year. The forecast called for a wet sky, low tide scheduled for 11:15 AM, water temperatures ranging from 65 to 69, good water clarity, and Dave Brown back as a boat owner. High expectations! Especially because Dave was paired with Adam, low tide was at 11:15 AM, and both are paid, professional, mud flat hunters. Deja Vu anyone?

All is well in mudflatville. The dynamic duo did not prop scar the Upper Bay mud flat ecosystem. Just a close call to keep expectations on high alert!

All in all, the day provided action for most anglers, although most catches were under the 15 inch minimum limit. Four anglers managed one livewell bass apiece throughout the day so the weigh in was going to be a close contest.

The winner was Johnny Mac with a 3.81 lb LM caught out of the weeds on a golden shiner spinnerbait. Johnny also displayed the characteristics of a seizure while experiencing a foot cramp upon setting the hook. Bucci was doubled over and laughing so hard, a passerby angler (in a Ranger, take note Gary) stopped for assistance, thinking the both were in trouble. He quickly realized the two were not in danger, just out of shape and in need of a bite!

Second place went to Pete Bucci with a 3.18 lb LM taken off a rock point on a greenpumpkin beaver. Rounding out the top three was Pete Yas with a 2.12 lb LM taken on a greenpumpkin/chartreuse tail 4 inch worm in open water in a shallow bay. Yas has has finished 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the first three tournaments this season and is running away with the points!

Brian Nagy was fourth with a 2 lb LM caught on a golden shiner spinnerbait in the back channel.

April 19, 2009, MCB #2, Elk Neck.

Seven boats, 11 anglers and a Lab pup, 99 combined fishing hours, one suicidal Stratos owner, 2 largemouth bass for a combined weight of 6.86 lbs. PRICELESS!!!!!!

The pros fished the Northern BASS Open out of Anchor Marine the previous three days with much of the same results. Many pros came to the scales empty handed, the function of cold fronts that brought heavy rains to the area earlier in the week. http://proxy.espn.go.com/outdoors/bassmaster/media/tournamentDaily?tournamentId=1251
.

As the day started, optimisim was in everybody's mind. Four days of sunny, stable weather would surely motivate the bass to move up and start feeding for the spawn. Plus, one year ago to the date, we fished the same area and 6, 5, and 4 pounders came to the scales. DIDN'T HAPPEN!!!!

What did happen was a two fish shootout between Brian Nagy and Pete Yaskowski. The winner was Nagy with a 3.55 lb largemouth caught on a senko near Turkey Point.
Yas gave him a run for the money with a 3.31 lb largemouth caught on a jig & pig way up in a canal in the Northeast.

That's why it's called fishing and not catching!

April 5, 2009, MCB#1, Octorara Lake.

Well, the first official tournament of 2009 carried anticipation of big, pre spawn bass in our dreams, however, the reality of a difficult day of fishing set in from the moment we launched. Heavy rains from Friday muddied the water a bit and the wind blew around 15 mph most of the day. Water temperature ranged from 49-52. Although most of us fished for 8 hours without a bite, Pete "bootman" Yas, with his magic black and blue jig, placed a nice 3 lb bass in the livewell to take all honors of the day. He truely is The Man, Myth, and Legend in one!

March 29, 2009, MCB warm up, Haws Ave.

Four boats participated on the Schuylkill River under a chilly, cloudy, sprinkle kind of spring day. The water had a slight stain on it and varied in temperature from 48-52 degrees during the day. As nice as it felt to be on the water after the dormant winter, it wasn't long before we realized we weren't on Lake Guntersville!

Fishing was slooooooooooow. Especially with a 15 inch minimum!

Jackie caught a nice 2 3/4 lb SM on a Lucky Craft Jerkbait and Jason caught a SM on a Mardi Gras Shakey Head. Johnny caught a SM on a Chartreuse Crankbait and Bucci caught a SM on a Shad Husky Jerkbait. Gary caught a chunker SM on a Greenpumpkin Stupid Tube and Hank The Tank lost a fish at the boat. Yas and Bennie saw a carp!

Hopefully, the rest of the year will be more productive!
